The fall rains have started and all of our grapes are safely in the winery. As we nurture them into wine, our work is by no means over. However, there are lessons that the vintage has already taught us.

Our growing season has been characterized by resilience thus far. Bud break, which kicks off the growing season in mid-April, was interrupted at some sites with frost. However, we have had a warm and dry July and August to date, so crop loads have been gaining steam and development looks healthy. Here are three things we know about the vintage so far.

Newberg, Ore. (March 10, 2022) - Reaffirming its posture as a socially and environmentally conscious winery, Et Fille has received its B-Corp Certification, an accreditation awarded to organizations that use the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

It began over a glass of wine, as most things that matter do.

It had become increasingly important to run our business, Et Fille Wines, in a manner that was environmentally and socially responsible. How could we raise the bar and more thoughtfully consider the impact our business had?

Beginning with the 2020 vintage, we started putting our statement of commitment on the back labels of all our bottles of wine (Committed to Sustainable Winemaking, Community, and Diversity and Equity).

A wine lover asked me, “Why does this matter? All I care about is that you make good wine, so why should I care what your values are?”

We are amidst harvest 2021 and have brought in our sparkling wine, rosé, viognier, and some of our Pinot Noir so far, with the balance to be brought into the winery this week. It’s shaping up to be a beautiful, high quality vintage and there are four things we know so far.

Our 2020 STEM & root Pinot Noir was recently featured on KOIN’s Thirsty Thursdays television program.

At Et Fille Wines, we wanted a beautiful silver lining to emerge from the challenges of the 2020 vintage. With this in mind, we created our 2020 STEM & root Willamette Valley Pinot Noir to help raise awareness and funds for STEM education.

Blind wine tasting can be defined as tasting wine without seeing its bottle or label and can be a fun way to encourage observation and discussion.

“I just know if I like a wine or not, but I can’t tell you why,” is a common refrain that I hear from visitors to my winery’s tasting room or virtual tastings.

To help, I developed The Et Fille Wine Tasting Framework, a simple tool for evaluating what it is you like or do not like, about a wine.

Virtual Corporate Wine Tastings: After a year of working remotely, it is hard to celebrate wins and build comradery among dispersed teams. How do you gather for milestones when annual sales awards, end-of-project dinners, team retreats, and client appreciation receptions are not feasible in person? Move into a virtual environment, of course.

Wine delivery has been very beneficial over the past year because one of the gifts of COVID has been more time at home, less airplane and commuting time and more stability in our nests. With nine months under our belt, though, we’re all looking for ways to create special occasions at home. Wine delivery is one of those avenues that can take us on a mini-vacation as we explore regions, varietals, and vintages which are outside of our “here and now”.
